Fat oxidises, kibble goes soft, and freeze-dried products lose their crunch. A high-barrier structure slows all three by blocking oxygen, water vapour and light, which is what buys the shelf life on the pack.

Not always. Foil is the strongest and the most expensive option, and it rules out metal detection on your line. For many dry products a metallised laminate with a shelf-life trial is enough.
Typically foil laminates run to 18–24 months, metallised to 12–18, and mono-material to 9–12. We confirm with testing rather than quoting the table.
Partly. A micro-perforated PET window keeps around 1.2 cc/m²/day, which is a compromise rather than a full barrier.
